Coins from 1953-1967 weigh 11.66 grams with a diameter of 29.72 mm and have a composition of .800 silver, .200 copper.
Coins from 1968-date weigh 8.10 grams with a diameter of 27.13 mm and have a composition of .999 nickel.

A design of a howling wolf was used in 1967 as part of the commemorative coins. In 1992, a reverse design with bracket dates 1867-1992 was used for the 125th birthday of Canada.
