$1 Coins, Nickel

Composition: 100% Nickel. Issued from 1968 to 1987.
All coins are proof-like/specimen quality unless otherwise noted.
The series is finished with no foreseeable plans to re-introduce this coin into circulation.

This coin was the forerunner to the Loon dollar issue. Most dates show the standard Voyageur design which appeared on the one dollar coin in silver for many years. Some of the dates have special commemorative designs, some similar to the silver proof dollar design for the year.

The entire series, with the exception of 1987, was meant to circulate as daily money. However, the size of the coin and relatively low mintage made its circulation difficult, and many people took what few were in circulation as souvenirs. The mint responded to collector demands by issuing dates 1970 through 1976 with special collector boxes and proof like surfaces. The 1970 edition has two types, one with Japanese writing on the box, associated with the 1970 World's Fair in Sapporo.

The 1987 edition was issued in Proof-Like and Proof sets only. 1987 was the first year of issue for the new $1 Loon design coin, spelling the end for the nickel dollar. The nickel dollar did not appear in 1987 specimen sets, allowing the loon to make its mint product debut. In 1984, a proof nickel dollar depicting Jacques Cartier was issued, and it is also possible to obtain nickel dollars in proof condition with voyageur designs extracted from proof sets, 1981-1987 although this is not common.
